Additional green building choices we made.

While LEED Canada for Homes provided a definitive checklist for sustainable building practices, we personally set additional "healthy living" principles & goals for the build.

  • The existing house on the site, a small, poorly built rancher from 1953, was completely recycled rather than sent to the landfill.
  • The home has been set back from the street so as to maximize South facing yard space for growing vegetables and maintaining an active connection with the community.
  • The main floor is only slightly above outside grade, so as to maintain a sense of connection with surrounding land and garden.
  • Occasional tours were held during the construction phase to share the experience and information about sustainable building practices with neighbours.
